A next generation air transportation system, called the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), allows airline pilots to rely on satellite-based GPS rather than ground-based radar. This is done by transmitting flight data through several ground stations around the country, requiring some high-tech equipment.
The new ADS-B ground stations rely on Pentair Technical Products’ enclosure solutions, supplied by our Hoffman®, McLean® and Schroff® brands.
Pentair Technical Products is the single supplier of the project’s 600 cabinets. Each ground station features a custom Hoffman cabinet to house sensitive electronics. These cabinets also contain a modified McLean T43 air conditioner and a Schroff 19-inch chassis system, based upon cPCI backplane technology with integrated cooling and power.
Once the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) completes the upgrade, it will mark a major milestone and a giant technological leap forward in air transportation and safety.
