Promoting Sustainability Through Energy-Smart Pool Pumps
Consumers have saved $1.9 billion in operating costs since 2007
We’ve done it again! Pentair is proud to announce that we’ve received the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award for the sixth consecutive year. The award recognizes our commitment to energy efficiency—both in the manufacture of our industry-leading pool pumps, but also in leadership in promoting wise and sustainable energy use.
Though we’ve been an ENERGY STAR partner since its pool pump program debuted in 2013, Pentair has been a champion of energy efficiency for more than a decade—introducing the industry’s first variable-speed pool pump in 2005.
Making a dent in household energy consumption
When you think of excessive energy use at home, air conditioning units, washing machines and dishwashers might be the first to come to mind. But for those with pools, there could be an energy-hog lurking in your backyard.

For the approximately 5 million homes in the U.S. with an in-ground swimming pool, the traditional single-speed pool pump is one of the top three energy-using appliances in the home. By upgrading an outdated or single-speed pump to an ENERGY STAR certified pump with variable speed technology, consumers typically see energy savings in the range of 75 percent. In fact, the single speed pool pump can cost more in electricity to operate in the first year than it cost to purchase in the first place.
Taking energy savings further
Beyond offering energy-saving technology to consumers, Pentair has been instrumental in helping to enact efficiency regulations in the manufacture of pool pumps.
The standards will require any newly installed dedicated-purpose pool pumps to operate within specified energy-saving standards by July 19, 2021. This regulation, while sure to make a huge impact, is just the first step in our drive to promote energy efficiency across the industry for years to come.
