How to Restore a Neglected Swimming Pool

Maybe you’ve let your pool go or perhaps you just bought a home with a pool that the original homeowner didn’t keep up with, but whatever your situation may be, it is possible to bring a neglected swimming pool back to life. It won’t be easy, and it certainly won’t be pretty, but we promise it will be worth it!

Neglected Swimming Pool

Step 1: Remove Debris

It’s now time to remove as much debris as possible. This part can be tricky if your pool water is as murky or you can’t see the bottom, because you won’t know what’s in your pool or how much you have to remove. Don’t focus on the negatives. Just do the best you can! That way you’ll have less to clog up your filtration system in step 2.

Step 2: Drain the Pool

Don’t try to salvage the water that’s in your pool. Go ahead and drain it so you can inspect the bottom for damage. It’s a better idea to start with an empty pool instead of wasting money on chemicals if you end up needing to drain the water anyway.

Step 3: Clear the Filter System & Check Equipment

Dirt and debris not only make a mess in your pool, they also clog up the filtration system. After sitting for a while due to neglect or just not being used parts may need to be replaced.

Start by removing as much buildup as you can and run the system. Keep an eye on the filter and clear it out as it collects debris. You may need to backwash or clean the filter several times during this process, but it’s worth it!

You may also need a new heater, filter, pump or sanitizer, depending on how long the system has been sitting. Inspect your equipment to see if anything needs to be replaced.

Step 4: Scrub the Pool Clean

Grab a pool brush and start scrubbing the walls and bottom of the pool. The more grime and algae you remove, the better your water quality will be when you add water and chemicals to your pool.

Step 5: Get It Professionally Inspected

Before you refill your pool, take this opportunity to have it professionally inspected. Pools that have been stagnant may have problems that need to be fixed before you refill them, so it’s a good idea to have your pool inspected for leaks, cracks or other damage.

Step 6: Fill It Up, Test Your Water & Enjoy!

Once you get the green light, fill the pool and work with your local pool company to get the right chemicals and test the water. Even if the water is clear, you want to make sure it’s safe for swimming. Once the water is safe, dive in and enjoy your hard work! You deserve it!
