Chlorine can be a common cause of a pool-like smell in water. Many water utility companies use small amounts of chlorine as a disinfectant. While helpful, chlorine gas may impact taste and odor.
However, chlorine might not be the only culprit behind the smell in your water.
Chloramines are a disinfectant typically formed from the reaction of disinfectant chlorine with the nitrogen atom in ammonia. “Many municipalities use chloramines for disinfection because they address several of the limitations that regular chlorine has,” explains Pentair Everpure chemical engineer James Fell, “standard carbon filtration is generally ineffective at removing these chloramines though.”
